21st Century Domesday Book

The British Library and Microsoft have joined forces to compile a 21st Century version of the Domesday Book.

During the Month of May they are asking UK citizens to send an email - either one from your inbox, or one you write yourself to email@emailbritain.co.uk.

The emails they receive will be digitally archived and will serve as a useful snapshot of 21st Century life for our grand-childrens' grand-children.

Internet broadband usage on the rise

A report recently released by the Office of Communications (Ofcom) shows that nearly two-thirds of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) now have broadband Internet access.

And for personal users, now over 50% have broadband access at home. Of these broadband users - 63% use it daily, and on average users spend over 9 hours a week on the Internet.

With this type of personal and commercial Internet usage, it is important that sites selling goods and services spend time to ensure their websites display correctly, are easy to use and allow the user to quickly make a buying decision. Otherwise, the customer will simply move on.

How secure are your passwords?

Recent reports of eBay accounts being hacked make interesting reading. Many accounts are hacked by simply guessing passwords!

With your password, someone could use it to conduct fraudulent transactions and access personal information about you.

Some guidelines we suggest are:

Never use a word for your password which can be found in the dictionary

Make your password at least 6 to 8 characters long

Use a combination of lowercase and uppercase letters, as well as numbers

A good idea is to think of a phrase and take the first letter of each word (e.g. iisigt = It Is Snowing In Guildford Today) for part of the password

You should also avoid using the same password on all sites.

Go offline, online!

A company of funeral directors in Northern Ireland have taken the innovative step of broadcasting services online.

The optional free service allows friends and relatives who are unable to attend - where distance or infirmity could be a problem - to participate from afar.

This is an incredibly creative yet practical use of the Internet, and whilst all the infrastructure exists - and isn't expensive - this is the first heard of example in the UK.

The Internet is really a powerful tool for bring people together, both in life and death it seems!

Information that must appear on your website

Companies Act 2006

As of 01 January 2007, companies are required to include certain regulatory information on their website, and within their email footers. This information is required as a statutory instrument of the Companies Act 2006, to implement the First Company Law Amendment EU Directive.

What information is required?

The name, email address and geographic address of the individual/company owning the website

A PO Box address is unlikely to be sufficient

Email and geographic addresses must be included, even if a contact form is present

If the company uses a trading name, the relationship must be clear. For example:

websushi is a trading name of Bonhurst Consulting Limited

If a company, the company registration number must be included, along with the place of registration. For example:

Bonhurst Consulting Limited is a company registered in England No. 5267177

If you are VAT registered, your VAT registration number must appear on your site, even if you are not selling online. For example:

VAT Registration number: GB 850 6893 00

If the business is a member of a trade or professional body (e.g. ABTA), the membership details (including membership number) must appear on the website

If you sell online, you must state whether prices are inclusive/exclusive of tax and/or delivery

The above information is not required on every single page, but must be easily accessible on your website. For example, a suitable place may be on the 'contact us' or 'about us' page.

What will happen if I don't update my website?

Failure to include this information on your website is in breach of Companies Act 2006 and may result in a fine.

Do you last more than 4 seconds?

Recent research suggests that online shoppers are only prepared to wait a maximum of 4 seconds for a web page to load. Of those surveyed, one-third said they would abandon the sale immediately, and a massive three-quarters would not return to the site again.

This obviously has a huge implication on businesses running online stores, as promoting customer loyalty is seen to be an important factor in growing their business.

Other areas of the research highlighted the importance of a clear, easy to use site - with particular focus on registration and checkouts. Additionally, the more your customer is likely to spend, the more these issues are important to them!

Battle of the browsers

There has been a great deal of hype this week with the release of Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) and by an apparently sheer coincidence, Firefox 2.0 (FF2).

For IE, the change has been huge - the most obvious feature being the introduction of tabs - so you can have several web pages open at once.

For Firefox, it has been more of a minor release - but with the useful addition of a spell-checker which underlines potentially misspelt words in red.

Both however have beefed up their security - and will warn you if you are on a suspected 'phishing' site (a site that appears to belong to a company - for example, a high street bank, eBay, PayPal - but actually is a fake site attempting to collect your login information).

Do you know your RSS from your elbow?

Many of us use instant messaging to communicate with colleagues and friends - services such MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, Trillian - but recent research shows that 57% of web users in Britain didn't know the acronym for 'instant messaging' is 'IM'.

In an age where technology is developing so fast, it is sometimes difficult to keep up with the latest phrases and buzzwords. Therefore, if is up to the suppliers of this technology to make sure their customers know exactly what they are paying for,

Top 30 UK e-commerce sites failing disabled users

Recent research by nomensa (www.nomensa.com) has demonstrated that some of the biggest shopping sites in the UK don't cater for their disabled users.

We're very pleased in websushi that we test each of the sites we design and develop meet at least the second level of accessibility - and specifically address the issues highlighted in the nomensa report.
